The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approved a new area code for the province of Alberta on October 30, 2013. The new 825 area code is the second NPA to be introduced as an overlay code for the entire province.
Alberta is currently served by 3 area codes: 403 covering the southern third of the province, including Calgary, 780 covering the remainder northern portion, including Edmonton, and 587 overlaying both 403 and 780 and serving the entire province. The new area code 825, scheduled to enter service on April 9, 2016, will also cover the entire province, overlaying all 3 existing area codes.
Local calls in the area are already dialed using 10 digits so this new area code relief will bring no changes to the way Alberta's residents dial telephone calls.
