Last month in December, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission approved a new overlay area code for the eastern portion of Pennsylvania to the west and north-west of Philadelphia. This area, including Allentown, Bethlehem, Chester or Reading is currently served by both 610 and 484 area codes. The new 835 NPA will join the two overlaying codes in September, 2022 and will be the third overlay area code to serve this part of the state.
Initially, area code 835 was announced in 2000 with plans to become active the following year. However, due to more efficient methods of number allocation, namely number pooling, its implementation date was later postponed.
There will be no change in the way residents of this area dial calls with the activation of area code 835.
