South Carolina Area Code 854

Approved on December 13, 2013 by the South Carolina Public Service Commission as the relief method for area code 843 serving coastal SC towns and cities such as Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Summerville, the new area code 854 will cover the same region of South Carolina and will be activated on October 19, 2015. From March 14, 2015 residents in area code 843 will be able and encouraged to dial full 10 digit phone numbers when placing local calls.

Key dates

• March 14, 2015 - start of permissive dialing period (area code 843 local calls may be dialed using both 7 and 10 digits)
• September 19, 2015 - end of permissive dialing period (10 digit only dialing may be used for local calls)
• October 19, 2015 - area code 854 enters service
