Virginia Area Code 948

Virginia's State Corporation Commission approved the new area code 948 in February this year. It is a Numbering Plan Area overlay which will serve the same geographic area currently covered by NPA 757, namely the eastern and south eastern parts of the state, with cities and towns such as Chesapeake, Hampton, Norfolk or Virginia Beach. All local calls in this area will mandatorily be dialed using 10 digits beginning on September 11, 2021.

Key dates

• September 11, 2021 - permissive 7/10 digit dialing period begins (local calls within NPA 757 may be dialed using both 7 and 10 digits)
• April 9, 2022 - mandatory 10 digit dialing begins
• May 9, 2022 - new area code 948 enters service
