Indiana Area Code 463

A new area code was announced by the Indiana Regulatory Commission (IURC) on April 8, 2015 for Central Indiana. Currently served solely by area code 317, this Numbering Plan Area covers the city of Indianapolis and a number of towns such as Clayton, Greenfield, Noblesville, Sheridan, Zionsville, etc. The new 463 area code will enter service in the second half of 2016 and will overlay the aforementioned NPA (cover the same geographic area).

Key dates

• March 19, 2016 - start of permissive 10 digit dialing (calls within NPA 317 may be dialed using both 7 and 10 digits)
• September 17, 2016 - end of permissive dialing, 10 digit dialing becomes mandatory
• October 17, 2016 - new area code 463 enters service

Implementation dates revised

In a new official document dated August 31, 2016 the Indiana Regulatory Commission (IURC) announces a one month postponement of area code's 463 activation. The date when mandatory 10 digit dialing starts has also been postponed. Here are the new dates:

• October 15, 2016 - mandatory 10 digit dialing begins
• November 15, 2016 - new area code 463 is activated
